Yule (Switzerland): Toblerone Chocolate Fondue

Switzerland is an interesting country since it represents a melding of several different cultures along with their languages living as one: the French, the German, the Italian and the Romansch. As a country, Switzerland is actually known to be a Confederation. It bears the Latin name “Confeoderatio Helvetica” which proudly reflects its ancestral link to the Helvetii, a Celtic People who were part of the larger Indo-European family.

Although Switzerland is a country which celebrates the Christian festivities during this time of year, many of those customs, as we know, do derive from the earlier practices of the celebration of Yule. Of course, one may think of the many things that make Switzerland so very famous: its mountains, the pastures, its cheeses, among many other things. But that which it is very, very famous for is its chocolate! And how best to celebrate Yule than by celebrating with a chocolate fondue!

Toblerone Chocolate Fondue:

Fresh fruits – bananas, strawberries, grapes, tangerines, pears, apples, raspberries. Fresh fruit should be ripe but still firm enough to not dissolve while dipping.

Dried fruit – apricots, dates, figs

Nut Breads – Nut breads can be served toasted or fresh. Cut into bite sized pieces. Try date nut bread, cinnamon bread, persimmon pumpkin or zucchini breads.

Bring cream and honey to simmer in heavy medium saucepan. Add chocolate; whisk until melted. Remove from heat. Whisk in kirsch and extract. Pour fondue into bowl; place on platter. Surround with fruit. Serve with skewers.

  • Omit kirsch for wee folk fondue, instead add another tablespoon of whipping cream.
